Indie singer-songwriter Margaret Glaspy has released a new track from her upcoming album Echo The Diamond, which will be her third full-length record, set to be released on August 18.

Originally from Sacramento, California, Glaspy started playing guitar in high school and decided to pursue it further. She received a grant to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston but later dropped out to perform in the Boston area. In 2012 and 2013, she independently released two EPs before signing with ATO Records in 2015. Since then, she has released two albums: Emotions and Math (2016) and Devotion (2020).

Her latest track, “Memories,” differs from the album’s lead single, “Act Natural,” which is a captivating blues-rock piece, characterized by its loud and energetic sound.

“Memories” is a raw and deeply personal song. It has a sprawling and melodic quality, with a tempo that engulfs the listener, much like the narrator of the song is swept away by her grief.

The song begins with a perfect blend of electric and acoustic guitar, gentle and soothing, with a melancholic tone. Glaspy’s vocals enter abruptly, singing, “Memories, feel like a disease,” her voice resonating with emotion. The drums provide a soft yet solid rhythm, complementing the song brilliantly. The production of the track is sensational, allowing Glaspy’s vocals and the beautiful songwriting to shine. Reflecting on the origins of the song, Glaspy shared, “Memories was probably the most challenging song for me to record; the take you hear is the only one I was able to complete. It captured a level of vulnerability that I had never achieved before, and it now holds a very special place in my heart. Although it is about a specific loss for me, it seems to resonate in different ways for anyone who listens to it.”

Because the subject matter is something that everyone will experience, the song is relatable, allowing listeners to find their own meaning in it. Glaspy delivers the poignant lines, “Memories, forgive me, please. I’m lonesome without you.”

The outro features a slow and heartfelt guitar solo that echoes the melody of the song, filled with emotion and tenderness.

Margaret Glaspy continues to prove herself as one of the most talented singer-songwriters in the indie/blues scene today, and her new album, Echo The Diamond, is highly anticipated. It will be released on August 18.
