Hi! What inspired you and Ladi Abundance to turn your shared personal experience into the single “Mr.”?
Once we realised we were both being played by the same guy, we could’ve easily turned on each other. Instead, we decided to stick together and unite in sisterhood. So, we headed to my home studio and started laying down beats and music. The lyrics flowed naturally from there. We channeled all that heartbreak and anger into creating our song “Mr.”
How did finding out you were both involved with the same guy affect the creative process behind “Mr.”?
A: The creative process honestly felt like therapy to us. Writing this song together served as a way for us to vent and say “F you!” The music and lyrics just flowed out of us effortlessly.
So, “Mr.” has these cool neo-soul and trip-hop vibes going on. How do you think those elements add to the whole theme of empowerment and betrayal in the song?
A: Even though we’re singing about heartbreak, those genre elements give the song a fun, sassy, and uplifting vibe. It’s as if we’re not just stuck in the pain; we’re rediscovering ourselves through the music.
Was there anything particularly tough about putting your emotions into the music and lyrics of “Mr.”?
A: Honestly, it flowed pretty effortlessly. It was like a weight off our shoulders, just letting all those emotions out through the song.
What are you hoping listeners who’ve been through similar trust issues will take away from “Mr.”?
A: We’re hoping it’ll make them feel less alone. Like, hey, we’ve been there too, but we’re bouncing back. And hopefully, it’ll inspire them to find their own happiness, independent of anyone else.
When you and Ladi Abundance were creating “Mr.,” how did you balance telling your personal story while still making it relatable to everyone?
A: We truly poured our hearts into “Mr.” But we kept reminding ourselves it’s not just about us. It’s about anyone who’s been deceived or cheated on… We wanted the song to resonate with anyone who’s ever had their heart broken and inspire others to find strength in the struggle.
Got any fun memories from recording “Mr.” that really capture your collaboration with Ladi Abundance?
A: This was our first music project together, and we had so much fun on it. We were on the same wavelength, bouncing ideas off each other. It was crazy how much we were on the same page. Working together felt like a breeze. The funny part is, we actually wrote the song together and recorded it a while back, but then the pandemic hit, and everything came to a halt, so we had to set it aside for a bit.
However, recently, while I was rummaging through my computer, I stumbled upon the rough mix. When I listened to it, I thought, ‘Wow, this is amazing!’ I immediately reached out to Ladi Abundance, and we decided to get it mixed and mastered by the ARIA Award winner, Govinda Doyle. I’ve worked with him on my last EP, Flowers, and he truly adds a sprinkle of magic to anything he touches.
