Hi! You recently released ‘I Come Alive’ and it’s brilliant. For anyone who’s yet to hear it, how would you describe the track?

A: For me, it’s about breaking free of society’s rules and expectations and pressures to conform…and in doing so, feeling alive for the first time. It’s about finding your true self, and not letting others define that for you.

How would you say it compares to your previous releases?

A: Great question. I feel like it has elements of “classic” OBS, but also takes our sound somewhere new. I don’t feel like we’re trying to recreate anything we’ve done before, but it also feels like it’s cut from the same cloth as everything we’ve done over the years, in a good way. Having Tara on guitar and Ryan on bass definitely adds a fresh vibe to the band, which I am so excited about.

Are you planning to make it part of a larger release, such as an EP or album?

A: Yes! We signed a record deal with Known Accomplice and we plan to release a full length in 2024!!

I’m very interested in how you started your adventure with music, and did you know from the beginning that this is what you wanted to do?

A: I was a late bloomer compared to most musicians. I didn’t start drumming until grade 12, and when I did start, I sucked for a good two years. But the great thing was, it made me feel great. So I plugged my headphones into my record player and played along with my idols, for literally 4 to 5 hours a day. I started with Ziggy Stardust and the Beatles and eventually graduated to Led Zeppelin and the Who. Eventually I began to suck less and then eventually I started to get really good. Once I hit the stage for the first time, that was it – I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. I never thought I would be so lucky to actually be doing it 25 years later. What a gift.

Your music interweaves so many different styles and sounds. If you could collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be and why?

A: Hmm. Pearl Jam was the first band that blew me away and changed my life, and I probably wouldn’t be a musician or a music lawyer if not for them. So writing a song with Eddie and the band would pretty much be the peak of the mountain for me.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given as a musician?

A: Be kind to everyone on the way up, because you’ll see them again on the way down.

Where are you based? Can you tell us how the music scene there has inspired your sound at all?

A: Saskatoon. I love the music scene here and we have the best hometown fans in the world. And the cool thing is, we have always felt like outsiders in the Saskatoon music scene, as we never really fit into the different scenes/styles of music here. So we just did our thing and eventually created a sound of our own, and I am lucky to call so many people in this music community a great friend.

And what was the first album you remember owning?

A: Pearl Jam “Ten” I picked up when I was 10 (in 1991) and it changed my life. To this day, when those songs come on, I’m immediately transported back to that stage in my life, and it makes me smile. That’s the power of music – it can allow you to time travel if you’re lucky.

Finally, have you got anything to share regarding upcoming gigs, and what have you got planned for the rest of 2023?

A: We’ve got a bunch of shows in Western Canada in November and December, and then we’ll hit Ontario etc in the new year!
