In the early stages of their emerging career, Holy Wave specialized in psychedelic dream pop infused with epic guitar melodies. Their origin story is natural – childhood friends Fuson, Joey Cook, Kyle Hager, and Julian Ruiz all hail from El Paso, where they gradually built their reputation by performing at various venues. Their frequent journeys to experience live performances by other bands in the Southwest led them to Austin, a vibrant city that has produced iconic artists such as Willie Nelson and Janis Joplin.

Following a series of recent tracks like “Happier” and “Bog Song,” their newest single, “Nothing In The Dark,” is a complex and catchy tune. It is driven by a pulsating drumbeat and enriched with tape-warbled synths, arpeggiated guitar chords, and fuzzy reverb.

Regarding the track, Joey Cook of the band commented, “Nothing in the Dark” explores how easily fear can dominate and dictate our actions. It delves into how distractions can hinder us from pursuing our desires or disguise themselves as our desires. However, when the light fades from our lives, like shadows, these distractions fade away, leaving us alone with ourselves and the darkness. The song encourages moving past the fear of shadows and embracing the light, so that we don’t end up isolated in the dark.”

During the quarantine period, the band, known for their sonic exploration, found unexpected inspiration through a Tarot card reading amidst the height of the pandemic. This experience influenced the title of their sixth full-length album, “Five Of Cups.” In Tarot readings, the Five of Cups card symbolizes loss and grief, often interpreted as dwelling on the past and struggling to appreciate the positive aspects of the present. Despite this association, “Nothing In The Dark” signifies a fresh and optimistic perspective for the band based in Austin. It is a captivating psychedelic rock gem that adds to their diverse and ever-evolving musical repertoire.
