Hailing from New Jersey, Brian Sella and Mat Uychich have gained a significant following with their pop-punk anthems. Since their self-titled debut album in 2011, they have combined straightforward lyrics with raw and energetic instrumentals to capture the angst of a generation. ‘Emotional’ is the third single from their upcoming album ‘You Are Who You Hang Out With’. The Front Bottoms focused on having fun with this new release, and ‘Emotional’ showcases the carefree spirit that the duo possesses. When Brian discussed the recording process, he emphasized the importance of allowing the songs to develop naturally. “Don’t force anything and just let the songs develop the way they’re meant to be.”
‘Emotional’ begins with a fuzzy resonance from quick strumming and an autotuned melody, deviating from the band’s usual nervy vocal style. Brian’s biting lyrics feel timeless, with an anthemic call of “ask if I’m emotional, fuck yeah!” contrasting against the distortion. As the opening verse concludes, more experimental elements are introduced, such as twinkly chimes and gravelly barking. The chorus intensifies with robust percussion and an overdriven cry before transitioning into a fast-paced burst of frantic piano and full-throttle guitar strokes. From this point on, the track becomes forceful, immersing listeners in a scream-your-lungs-out pit as Brian reflects on a doomed youth, holding onto hope and respect to navigate perpetual uncertainty. True to their roots, the band continues to dissect millennial frustration through defiant instrumentation.
‘You Are Who You Hang Out With’ is set to be released on August 4th. While the preceding singles ‘Outlook’ and ‘Punching Bag’ have hinted at a charismatic comeback from The Front Bottoms, ‘Emotional’ delivers a punch as the duo’s indomitable attitude is challenged by the vulnerability of disillusionment. Through confrontational introspection and the honest admission of “We’re both trying, you gotta give us that,” being emotional doesn’t have to be an obstacle. For The Front Bottoms, it is a clear strength.
