Hi! Can you share the personal experiences that inspired “L is For” and how they influenced the song’s narrative and emotional tone?
A: Well, I was with someone for 10 plus years and then married for 4 months… the song sorta explains it in painfully exact detail from there.
How did your collaboration with Derek Hoffman shape the sound and production of “L is For,” and what unique elements did he bring to the song?
A: Derek has always understood what I want something to sound like in my head without ever hearing it haha. We’ve been working together for years so it works well. I wanted this song to be stripped down and feel very raw and he too
The theme of separation and betrayal is central to “L is For.” How do you approach writing about such deeply personal and sensitive topics in your music?
A: I really just approach it like therapy. I spill it all out onto the writing room floor and then sift through the wreckage until I find something that I feel connects.
There are ‘easter eggs’ in the music video for “L is For.” Could you give us a hint about what fans should look out for?
A: So having co directed this video I wanted it to be very simple but also really meaningful. I used the leather jacket I wore from my wedding and had it used to
symbolize someone holding my heart. Every time you see the jacket, the actress is
contemplating leaving.
Your forthcoming acoustic EP is described as your most personal work to date. How does “L is For” set the tone for the rest of the EP, and what can fans expect from it?
A: The Ep is really just 5 therapy sessions for me. They all sort of deal with different stages of the process of betrayal, anger, sadness, more anger, acceptance and moving on. This song in particular sets the tone because it tells people the backstory of what happened.
Having achieved notable success in a short time, including the CCMA Award for Rising Star, how do you feel these accolades have influenced your approach to music and your career?
A: Is 10 years a short time? Although I’m grateful for all of the moments along the way… I try to wear blinders and just focus on creating what feels like it’s for me first.
Your song “Still Somethin’” from the EP “Four Good Years” garnered significant attention. How do you see “L is For” building upon or diverging from the musical style of your previous hits?
A: I’ve always been of two minds on music. These acoustic ep’s always are fan favourites in the long run ! I’m just thankful I get to do both styles.
As someone who has secured the “Top of the Country” title and performed alongside stars like Dallas Smith and Dean Brody, what have you learned from these experiences that you bring into your own music and performances?
A: Don’t be an asshole. Those guys are as talented as they are humble.
With plans to hit the live circuit again in 2024, can you give us a sneak peek into what fans can expect from your upcoming live shows?
A: Well, I think the fans are going to see a bit from both sides of what I create my socially this year, with a focus on amalgamation of the two. There’s a tour announcement coming soon as well.
Looking beyond the acoustic EP and into the future, what are your long-term goals or aspirations as an artist, and how do you envision your musical evolution?
A: I think I will probably die singing sad songs in a soft seat theatre surrounded by weeping divorcees.
